Thomas R. Monahan dies; highly respected city sports leader
By BOB MONTGOMERY , Bristol Press Correspondent 07/03/2003
BRISTOL -- Thomas R. Monahan, retired director of athletics for Bristol schools who died at Bristol Hospital Wednesday, will be remembered as one of Bristol’s legendary sports figures. In fact, when the Bristol Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1997, the name of Monahan --both Thomas R. and his father, Thomas M. -- surfaced at the top of those who were considered forinduction into the founding class. His father was inducted that first year, while Thomas R. opted to sit one out.
"When you think athletics in Bristol, the Monahan name -- both he and his father -- stands out," said Dave Mills, president of the Bristol Sports Hall of Fame who played school sports in Bristol during Monahan’s tenure as athletic director. "He was a role model for us and was a leader here as our athletic director.
"In his involvement with the high school coaches’ associations at both the state and national levels, he represented Bristol with great dignity. He was an intelligent man and an eloquent speaker, well-respected."
A standout athlete at Bristol High School, Class of 1936, Monahan went on to Scarborough School, N.Y., before graduating from Columbia University and being awarded his M.A. degree there in 1948. He was awarded a certificate of advanced graduate study from the University of Hartford in 1961.
Monahan served as a physical education instructor at Fort Lee High School in New Jersey before assuming the same duties at Iona Prep School in New Rochelle, N.Y. and, later, at Columbia.
He returned to Bristol in 1948 and became a biology instructor and coach at Bristol High. After the unexpected death of his father in his office at the school in 1952, young Tom took over his dad’s responsibilities as director of athletics at the school.
In 1958, Monahan was appointed director of athletics and physical education of Bristol schools, a post he held until his retirement in 1979. Among memories he shared about those times was the split of Bristol High into the newly built Bristol Eastern High School and Bristol Central High in fall 1959. He was responsible for setting up the traditional Thanksgiving Day rivalry between the two Bristol public schools, one of local sports’ biggest annual events.
Outside the Bristol school system, Monahan was active in the startup of both the Connecticut High School Coaches Association and National High School Coaches Athletic Association. He served each as president at one time or another and was properly honored by each for his years of volunteer service.
"He was well respected in both organizations," said John Fontana of Southington, executive director of the CHSCA. "He and my [late] uncle Joe [Fontana, part of a legendary sports family in Southington like that of the Monahans in Bristol] were inseparable and played important parts in both organizations being successful.
"Tom was respected by everyone. He didn’t speak often, but when he did, everyone listened. When there was a tough question to be answered, we generally went to him for advice or for an answer.
"He was a great, great man," Fontana said.
In 1984, Monahan joined his late father as a Gold Key Award recipient, an honor bestowed upon him by the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance, the highest recognition the state provides a sports participant.
Fontana says Monahan remained active in the CHSCA until recent years, but he would have to drive him to the nightly meetings.
This was also true with the Bristol Sports Hall of Fame. John Novakowski, current supervisor of Bristol athletics and a BSHOF director along with Monahan, would take him to those meetings. Monahan, who moved to Southington a few years ago, only stepped down from that position a couple of years ago.
The honors bestowed upon Monahan, also a former president of the Bristol Kiwanis Club, were lengthy, including induction into numerous halls of fame. His most recent honor came this past winter at St. Paul Catholic High School during the St. Joseph’s School 100th Anniversary Basketball Jamboree celebration. There, Monahan, who received a lengthy standing ovation from the appreciative crowd in the school gymnasium, was recognized as the school’s "Coach of the Century."

1918-2003In 1993, when Thomas R. Monahan announced he was stepping down from his duties as the director who selected and assigned basketball officials for the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) and its boys basketball tournament, there had been a Thomas Monahan actively involved in Bristol and area sports from the time of World War I. His late father, Thomas ‘‘Tommy’’ M. Monahan, who had moved his family to Bristol from Massachusetts, started coaching football at Bristol High in 1917 and later became athletic director at the school. Thomas R. took up those responsibilities after his father passed away. Thomas R. Monahan was born in Bristol in 1918 and graduated Bristol High School in 1936 as a multi-sports athlete, having been the quarterback of the football team. He went on to Columbia University and served in the Army during World War II. He taught physical education out-of-state for a couple of years before returning to Bristol in 1948 to teach biology. He received his sixth-year certificate from the University of Hartford in 1961. After his legendary father was found dead in his office at Bristol High, young Tom was selected to take over his responsibilities in 1952 as the school’s athletic director while coaching football and, later, baseball and basketball.Young Tom said in an interview once that he had pretty much the same coaching philosophies as his father, having worked with him summers before heading back to college in the late 1930s and early 1940s. However, he wasn’t afraid to differentiate when he thought he needed too.Just prior to 1959 when Bristol Eastern High School was newly-opened and the Bristol High building became the first location of Bristol Central High, Monahan was given the title of director of physical education for Bristol schools. One of the projects he took on in this position was organizing the annual Thanksgiving Day gala between Central and Eastern. He accepted the prestigious ‘‘Turkey Game Bell’’ from the Gay family. The bell has since gone to the annual winner for display.Monahan, a past president of the Kiwanis Club in Bristol and a park commissioner, also became involved in both the Connecticut High School Coaches Association as a charter member and the National High School Athletic Coaches Association, serving as president at one time or another in each organization while also being inducted into each of their hall of fames. In 1979, Monahan retired as Bristol’s athletic director, thus ending 30 years of coaching and administrative work for the Bristol school system. A testimonial was held in his honor at Lake Compounce. His national, state and city contributions made him well-known, respected and often honored. In 1983, he received the prestigious Gold Key Award from the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance, an honor his father had received during the 1940s. He also joined his father as an inductee of the Bristol Sports Hall of Fame. Tom served as a director of the organization for a number of years. In having interviewed ‘‘coach,’’ as his former players called him, I found him to be quite the gentleman. He always represented himself and Bristol well. He was a man who walked and talked with great pride and dignity. He was also a man who had many friends. I had accompanied him on a couple of occasions to visit friends who were ill. For example, we met at New Britain General Hospital this time of the year in 1997 to visit an ailing Albie Gurske, a 1933 three-sports athlete at Bristol High. After we left Albie’s room, and this was just three days before Albie passed away, coach said to me, ‘‘Boy, he was a heck of an athlete.’’ Tom Monahan appreciated Albie for his athleticism and for the gentlemanly manner in which he carried himself throughout his life. The last appearance Monahan made in a public arena was at St. Paul Catholic High School on a Sunday afternoon in 2003 when he and Eddie McHugh, both St. Joseph School graduates, coached teams from different decades during the grammar school’s 100th anniversary celebration basketball jamboree. He was awarded the school’s ‘‘Coach of the Century’’ award at mid-court prior to official play and was given a standing ovation from an adoring crowd -- proof that he had not been forgotten and would not be forgotten.Thomas R. Monahan died July 2, 2003 in Southington where he had been residing for a decade. Monahan, who was 85, left his wife Rose (Fegan); five daughters, Maureen Mills of Bel Air, Md.; Sheila Moffet of Norwalk; Geraldine of Greenwich; Theresa Hammond of Northford; Christine Williamson of North Stonington; a brother, Edward, of Bristol; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Many have stated that the rich history of Bristol sports history begins with the Monahan name.BOB MONTGOMERY (2004)
